Where will Happy go?

It has long been known that Kevin Harvick is very unhappy at RCR. Why is he unhappy? There are several factors that I see: the frustration of a long winless streak, the bad luck he's had since the fall race at Talladega last season, where he had the car to beat but got caught up in Carl Edwards' boneheaded strategy (Edwards tried to bump-draft his teammate Greg Biffle in the corner but ended up causing a 12-car wreck that affected half of the Chasers, including Harvick.), the crew swap earlier in the year, to name a few factors. I will break these down as best I can.

THE WINLESS STREAK

Coming into the 2007 Daytona 500, Harvick was coming off the best year of his career: he won a total of 14 races between the Busch (now Nationwide) Series and the Nextel (now Sprint) Cup Series. He blew away the field all season long in the Busch Series, winning the title by OVER 900 points. In fact, he clinched the title at Charlotte. He won nine races in the Busch Series, and in fact completed all but ONE lap. For the whole season. Ironically, Charlotte was where he finished a lap down for the only time that year. On the Cup side, he scored his first win of the season in the spring race at Phoenix. While he was running well between his first two wins, he didn't win again until the Glen, when Kurt Busch committed into the pits just before the final caution came out. He stole that win BIG TIME. He should have wore a ski mask underneath that helmet! A few weeks later, he would post consecutive wins for the first (and only) time in his career, winning at Richmond and Loudon (to start the Chase). His final win would come at Phoenix, narrowly holding off a hard-charging Jimmie Johnson. Harvick would be the first driver to sweep Phoenix (since duplicated last year by Johnson).

During the 500, Harvick didn't have the best car, but his crew did a great job adjusting to the changing conditions, getting the car better as the race wore on. He had a solid car, one I thought would be a top 10 car. But as the laps wound down, he kept moving up. The final lap, particularly coming out of Turn 4, was epic. It was a drag race between Harvick and Mark Martin. Martin lost his drafting partner when Kyle Busch got in an accident, triggering the Big One behind Harvick and Martin. In the melee, Matt Kenseth gave Harvick a big enough push to give Harvick the win by 0.020 seconds, the closest finish in Daytona 500 history. Who would have thought that race would be Harvick's most recent win?

While Harvick has been winless since as far as points races go, he did make the Chase both in 2007 and 2008. He won the All-Star race in 2007 and the Bud Shootout in early February. But after Atlanta, when he finished fourth, his luck went south in a hurry. He wouldn't have another top 10 finish until the Brickyard 400, where he finished sixth.

THE CREW SWAP

Going into the season, Harvick had Todd Berrier as his crew chief. Berrier as crew chief led Harvick to the 2001 Busch Series title. But it wasn't until late in the 2005 season that Harvick and Berrier would be reunited. Immediately they clicked again. Harvick finished 2005 strong, with high hopes for 2006. With Berrier on the pit box, Harvick made the Chase three consecutive years from 2006 to 2008. In 2006, Harvick was one of four drivers that still had a chance to win the Cup championship at Homestead. But as the years wore on, it is my opinion that the #29 team stagnated while many of the other teams got better. This culminated in a crew swap with the #07 crew. Happy, he wasn't. He lost his confidante, his "security blanket", so to speak. IMO, Childress panicked. He wasn't used to seeing Harvick run this poorly. But it wasn't the crew. It was the engine builders that gave him crappy engines. It was the car chief that poorly executed a game plan on race day. And it was also not-so-Happy.

BAD LUCK

Where do I start? Do I start with Sam Hornish Jr (TWICE)? David Stremme? Cut tires? Blown engines? Bad pit stops? I'll pick on Stremme. He drove recklessly in the esses at the Glen, wrecking Harvick and causing significant damage to the A-frame of the #29 car. A top ten car went down the drain. Understandably, Harvick was pissed off. He basically said that Stremme needs to work on a new skill set. (My words added here: because the road courses are beyond his ability as a driver.)

CONCLUSION

Which brings me to this: where will Happy go next year? It's possible he's not going anywhere, as Childress will have Happy honor the final year of his contract. In the offseason, Happy and RC need to sit down and have a powwow. Tony Stewart has stated he's not immediately expanding to three teams. There's no room at the Hendrick Inn. Red Bull is staying with Toyota. Logically, Happy stays at RCR but doesn't sign an extension. If they don't make the Chase next year, he's released from the #29 early and perhaps Stephen Leicht finishes the season driving the #29 on an interim basis. But stranger things have happened.

Jon...If you changed a few names and tracks, Dale Jarrett's story sounds similar. He went from winning, to dealing with wishy washy Todd Parrott to running okay; then leaving Robert Yates to work for Mikey and running poorly. Maybe if Kevin leaves RCR, he will go with a winning team like Tony Stewart and not some bozo like Mikey, cause Kevin is too young to retire and become an announcer.lol

The most likely scenario in my opinion would be that Harvick stays at RCR for 2010. Then goes to Stewart/Haas as a third car. Stewart/Haas could then use KHI as development drivers in NNS and Truck. With KHI pitching in, maybe Stewart and the gang can ween themselves from the HMS teet, and develope their own engine and chassis dept.
I like Harvick, he is the one guy in a Chevy that I can root for. I wish success for him, until he is in a HMS car.

Next year things will have changed over the winter and RCR will be a factor again. They just miss it for this season last winter on motors and cars. Roush has had a bad year as well even though Carl ,Biffle is in the chase and maybe Matt.

I really think Kevin will do the same as Tony Did by joinning up with another smaller team and having the best stuff supplied like Tony has and be another franchies for Hendricks.

The other thing is if you can find out what drivers are at the end of there contracks in 2010 as well, will Kevin be the only high freeagent in the hunt?? That will really help in trying to figure out what will be aviable too him.

Cheers2You

I agree with Storkjrc Happy will stay with RCR through next yeat and finish out his contract.

And I do think he and Stewart will team up in 2011. Allowing Harvick to run with a good team in Cup and allow Stewart and his organization a place to develop new drivers and allow the Cup drivers of his organization a place to play on Saturday.

Or Happy could bring his Nationwide team up to Cup and run his own equipment.

The real issue is the cars/ chassis. From an engineering point of view these things are on razor blades and this is causing issues for many of the teams.

It is a surprise that Hendrick has it figured out ? The resources at HMS are tremendous. They can build as many cars and engines as they desire and it is all good stuff.

HMS is making people look bad right now even if a Hendrick car fails to win the title this year. It does not matter what kind of car they build, it is good.

Every team has about the same engine horspower, sure they can tweek a little torque or top end but Hendrick has that covered to.

What is going on with Harvick ? They have decent stuff but are behind Hendrick and Gibbs with development of a total package.

Childress has made major changes to his racing efforts more than once and usually it paid off. Now it is a struggle to run top 10.

Hendrick's people know something about racing chassis that all the other teams are looking for but havent found. When they do find it you will know.

Not to flag wave for HMS as I am not a big fan of the Hendrick deal but the results are obvious. They have a some of the best people in racing with everyone on the same page.

This powerhouse will not weaken until Hendrick gets out of it or some of their people leave. Tony got Darian Grubb and turn key cars. If Chad Knauss leaves for another team then some of the chassis stuff will show up elsewhere.

This is what is wrong with alot of teams.

Beverly, who was DJ's crew chief before Parrott? Whoever it was, they clicked. It was late in DJ's career that he was paired up with Parrott. By that time, many of Yates' engineers left for other teams. Strangely enough, DJ going to MWR was a blessing for David Reutimann.

Stork, I think RC shutters the #07 team next year, and Casey Mears with it. Harvick and Mears do not get along. In that scenario, Harvick stays at RCR next season. But I do like your scenario!

Forensic, RCR has also had some of the worst luck I've seen. When Stremme made contact with Harvick, it appeared on the surface to be light, but the A-frame was damaged. Normally, it would be a bent bumper. Good insight about who's going to be a free agent after 2010.

Tsfan, that's the likeliest scenario. But I don't see KHI moving up to Cup until Harvick retires. I do see them being a development team for SHR in Trucks and Nationwide.

RL, thanks. Hendrick has some of the best engineers on the planet working for them. And you can bet Rick Hendrick pays them some HUGE jack to keep them there. As for Knaus, I wouldn't doubt he's the highest-paid crew chief in NASCAR. He's earned it. And he's been with JJ from the beginning. Stewart getting Darian Grubb was HUGE. I can see a long-term partnership between Stewart and Grubb. Re Harvick, I think that team has set its sights on next season, and staying in the Top 35 in points. Perhaps bringing Todd Berrier back as Harvick's crew chief will do Happy good.

Harvick is used to being number one. Now he's being jacked around and it looks like RCR has been trying to make Bowyer their quarterback for the last year or so.

Kev will probably land on his feet. Red Bull is feeling him out. The only way they will ditch Scott Speed is if they can replace him with an experienced/name driver.

Don't be so sure that he's joined at the hip with Chevy. Money talks.

storkjrc said...

gene, love the idea of Happy replacing Speed at RedBull. But I think Harvick stays with a bowtie team. KHI is running both Chevy trucks and NNS stuff. It would take megabucks, to turn KHI into a Toyota team. With the auto industry the way it is, I don't think Toyota makes that move.

Jay Frye at RedBull says they are close to a deal with Toyota. Maybe this week or next.

jon_464 said...

Gene, I've heard that Red Bull wants to add a third team with an experienced driver. They have been considering going to Chevrolets, but Toyota remains the front runner. I think the only way Happy goes to Red Bull is if they join the Bowtie Brigade. With Harvick being last in points among the four RCR drivers, it's no wonder he's being jacked around.

Stork, if Red Bull does reup with Toyota, that pretty much rules out Happy going there. My gut feeling is that he and RC hash out their differences in the offseason and bring a renewed focus into the 2010 season. But Happy doesn't sign an extension until next offseason, if at all.

Gene Haddock said...

I also believe that Harvick will stay with RCR for just next season. He's acting like Brandon Marshall trying to get fired. But Childress isn't letting him,and maybe a sponsor go, without getting paid big time.

Money is no object to the guy that owns Red Bull. After HMS snubbed him, he said he could race Chevys out of his own pocket! But Toyota does have the inside track with RBR. The guy wants winners. If Vickers had not won at MIS he still wouldn't have a new contract.

Not much money involved for KHI to change Trucks to Toyotas.... a few different decals, and Toyota supplied engones. NW series is going to COT next year, no changes for that switch except engines.

jon_464 said...

I think Harvick will end up staying at RCR in 2010 on one condition: he explores free agency. I just don't see him switching to Toyotas for the Truck Series considering KHI's awesome success in the series. While it is possible he reups with RCR sometime in 2010, I don't see it happening. After 2010, Mark Martin will likely retire, and perhaps Jeff Gordon as well. It's very possible Happy could end up at HMS in either the 5 or 24 car.

Tsfanpc said...

jon I agree KHI moving to Cup is highly unlikely. But then again, I never thought Stewart would leave Gibbs. So anything is possible in this crazy world we call NASCAR. lol

tezgm99 said...

is there any news on Truex's replacement at EGR yet? If not, that's a possible move to a Chevy team that is wheeling out decently competitive cars this year *shrugs*

jon_464 said...

Tsfan, I don't see Harvick moving to Cup until he retires as a driver, at the earliest. Like you, I thought Stewart was a lifer at Gibbs, until they switched to Toyota last season. Had Martin not announced he was driving full-time, Stewart would have been in the #5 car, IMO.

Tez, I've heard Jamie Mac is a possibility in the #1 car. But if the #07 is shuttered at RCR, Casey Mears could get that seat.

I am not sure when Kurt's contract is up but he has been rumored to go to RedBull too...

I dont see Happy being let go until end of contract.

I also just see Kevin having the same kind of year Kurt did last year. Without testing they got behind the 8-ball and then bad luck has ruined their mojo. Kurt bounced back with hard work, now RC and Kev have to sit down and focus to get things on track for next year. Its not so catastrophic - just need to put in a little elbow grease!
